St. Maarten's Island Neighbours

St. Barts, Anguilla and Saba

France flag    U.K. flag    Saba flag

This section reflects St. Barts, Anguilla, and Saba as they were during my visits from 2005 through 2007.  These three islands are each accessible as day trips from St. Maarten.  I visited St. Barts three times, the others once.  They couldn't be more different.  St. Barts is French and hilly, Anguilla is English and flat, and Saba is Dutch and extremely mountainous.

Hurricane Irma in September 2017 was the the strongest storm on record in the open Atlantic, and it devasted this part of the Caribbean with loss of life, injuries, and the widespread destruction of power and communications services and buildings.  Travel to these islands via St. Maarten was suspended for a while, but has resumed using a tent instead of the demolished terminal building.

The recovery has begun, but it is a slow process.  We wish the islanders all the best in their massive rebuilding undertakings.  For those of us lucky enough to have seen these islands before the storm these images can bring back memories.  For others these are a preview of what's to come.
